Consultation of the week: Ensuring Good Behaviour in Schools: Guidance for Governing Bodies, Head Teachers, School Staff and Employers

What is it all about? The government has made it clear that its key priorities for schools include raising standards of pupil behaviour and tackling all forms of bullying. To do this it wants to restore teachers' authority to the classroom and make sure they have clear guidance to help them feel confident in exercising that authority. The guidance, along with comments from the consultation, will be published in July.

What are the main points? The guidance will set out the government's expectations of pupils, parents, teachers and head teachers, and summarises the legal powers that govern behaviour in schools. As well as giving general guidance to school staff and governors on their roles in shaping behaviour it will clarify rules on the use of reasonable force and powers to search pupils and confiscate items. It will also cover how to deal with allegations of abuse against teachers of other staff.

Who can have their say? Anyone with an interest in pupil behaviour, including all those mentioned in the title of the consultation.
