Conservatives: Sure Start needs to be more targeted

Sure Start should be more closely targeted towards the parents of children with behavioural problems, a member of the Conservative shadow cabinet has said.

Dominic Grieve, the shadow attorney general, told a fringe event organised by 4Children at the Conservative conference that some Sure Start centres were doing a good job but too often the wrong people were benefiting because they were only placed in deprived areas.

"Because of this desire not to stigmatise, Sure Start is based on areas," he said. "Unless we start tackling the parents of children with behavioural problems we are missing the point."
