Conservative Conference: Provider slams 'flawed funding'

1 min read Early Years
The funding of childcare is "fundamentally flawed", according to a leading nurseries provider who has called for the removal of the "middle people" in funding arrangements.

Mike Thompson, chief executive of Child Base Ltd, told a Policy Exchange fringe event at the Conservative Party Conference that once local authorities had taken a slice of money given to providers from central government, centres only receive around £8 per child.

Once administration, staff, and overhead costs are taken into account this is not enough, he added.

"If I was to make a plan, it would be making an administration system that works," he said. "If we cut out the middle people and administration burden we can achieve something."

Thompson added that to make working in childcare centres a career of choice, there must be increased funding to enable providers to pay better wages and give staff more benefits.
