Connexions: Service defends its careers advice role

Careers advice charity The Guidance Council has called for a national debate on the issue, quoting school and college heads who say that demands to meet targets for supporting disengaged young people are putting universal careers services at risk.

But Carolyn Caldwell, executive director of the National Association of Connexions Partnerships, said: "Untargeted services are more difficult to measure, so there is more of a perceived emphasis on working with disengaged young people.

"Connexions is not as well resourced as it was meant to be. There are far fewer personal advisers than was planned."

Initial estimates were set at 15,000 personal advisers, with 9,000 support staff. However, according to the National Audit Office, there are only 7,000 qualified personal advisers and 2,400 frontline support staff.
