Connexions: Connexions Card could be part of national ID scheme

1 min read

Responding to a report on plans for identity cards by Parliament's Home Affairs Select Committee, the Home Office said it wanted to make use of the Connexions Card readers already in place in English schools.

A spokesman said: "There may be cost savings to be realised for identity cards by exploiting the existing infrastructure."

The Home Office said identity cards could cut red tape in post-16 course registration and reduce fraud in funding applications, although it admitted that abuse of the post-16 education system is not a "major issue".

Alison Alexander, development director at Connexions South Central, said: "The Connexions Card is successful in its own right. To turn it into a national ID card is viable, but it is likely to be an expensive task."
