So what's all this about ID cards? Make that entitlement cards, please. ID cards have been rejected by the Government as un-British. These are something very different.
Really? Well, possibly no, not really. The people at civil liberties body Liberty say that changing the name is just another piece of Government spin. There is certainly no doubt that the prime purpose of the card is to give those lawfully resident in the UK a means of confirming their identity. It can then be used to help people gain entitlement to products and services.
The Government believes that by presenting it as an entitlement to public services, the card will help create a sense of citizenship.
