Community relations: Fund to support young Muslims

The Government last week launched a 650,000 fund to strengthen the voice of young Muslims and Muslim women in a bid to combat extremism.

The types of project that will benefit from the Preventing ViolentExtremism: Community Leadership Fund include community and businessleadership courses for young Muslims as well as schemes that promoteequal opportunities.

Announcing the fund, then-communities secretary Ruth Kelly praisedcourses run by training organisation Common Purpose, which offersparticipants the chance to work as apprentices for community andbusiness leaders. Kelly said: "This fund will support potentialcommunity leaders, women and young people to help shape the places theylive."

Applications for funding are open until 31 March 2008 or until the moneyruns out.
