Young people could be forgiven for feeling their every move is being tracked. Nicola Hill finds out their thoughts on increased scrutiny from security conscious youth agencies

Young people are worried that the Government is going to introduce ID cards under the auspices of child protection. In some Scottish schools so-called "smart cards" have already been introduced, allowing children access to school libraries, sports facilities and free school meals. They also offer discounts in shops and fast-food outlets.

Alison Preuss, vice-chair of Action on Rights for Children, based in Scotland, says: "Smart cards are a way of introducing ID cards by the back door. Not many parents know what is going on and don't realise data is fed into a central database. We are going to end up with complete surveillance."
