Citizenship: Children to speak at G8 gathering

School children in the UK will have the opportunity to present their ideas on combating climate change and problems in Africa to world leaders under a new citizenship programme.

The J8 - or junior G8 - initiative, which includes a resource for teachers developed by the Morgan Stanley International Foundation and the Department for Education and Skills, will culminate in a presentation by eight winning schools to the G8 Summit of the world's leading industrial nations at Gleneagles in Scotland next July.

The programme, aimed at 13- to 16-year-olds, has been piloted at schools including Aylwin Girls' School in Southwark, London. Teacher Roberta Wallace, speaking at the official launch of J8 last week, said pupils at her school had learned "invaluable skills".

The UK takes over the presidency of the G8 in January.
