Children's services: Professionals are urged to take risks

A leading think-tank has warned against a culture of "playing it safe" in children's services and has urged professionals to take more risks.

Researchers from Demos spoke out as they launched a new report onchildren's trusts. Duncan O'Leary, the report's author, said: "Anexcessive focus on risk aversion could be taking power away fromfront-line professionals and failing to put the needs of children first.Leaders in children's services must help to create safe environments inwhich professionals can take the kind of risks that can improve servicesfor children and learn openly from mistakes."

The report proposes steps to foster a culture of "owning up" inchildren's services. It argues that departments should learn directlyfrom the success of critical incident reporting in the NHS.

It also calls for inspections of children's services to be refocused, aspreviously revealed by Children Now (30 November-6 December).
