Public spending risks being squandered unless housing professionals work more effectively with those in health and social care to provide local services for young people, a report has warned.

The report by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) issues localauthorities and their partners with an urgent call to action. It claimsthat health and social care costs will soar if housing professionals areleft out of the picture.

It calls on housing planners to work with health and social care staff,to consider how accommodation can be developed or refurbished to preventill health.

The report sets out examples of local authorities that are saving cashby commissioning and delivering services together.

It cites North Somerset Council as an example after it remodelledservices for young care leavers. The council brought togetherprofessionals from housing, health, social care and Connexions toimprove the quality and quantity of housing available for careleavers.
