Eight unions are planning to strike over government plans to increasethe age at which local government workers can retire and receive theirpension. Unions say this treats local government staff unfairly sinceother public sector workers, including teachers and fire fighters, willnot face the same changes.
Ian Johnston, director of the British Association of Social Workers'said the strike had left some children's services directors strugglingto put emergency arrangements in place.
Johnston said people providing vital services should be exempted fromstrike action. "But the people who want to put maximum pressure on thepay masters will see that it's only by withdrawing vital services thatthey will have the maximum impact," he added.
