CHILDREN'S RIGHTS: Report calls for youth justice rethink

The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights is urging the Government to look at alternatives to custodial sentences, and to rethink sentencing. It has published its 10th report on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which looks at the UK's compliance.

While acknowledging that the Government has made progress in areas such as poverty, mental health and school exclusions, the report, published on 24 June, calls for protection for refugee and asylum-seeking children.

Jean Corston MP, chair of the committee, said: "The convention provides a reference point that needs to be at the heart of policymaking."
