Children's centres: Voluntary sector to run Dorset centres

Almost half of the children's centres across Dorset will be run by voluntary organisations, under a new blueprint agreed by the county council.

Some 21 children's centres are expected to be up and running in thecounty by 2010 and council bosses want the voluntary sector to manage upto 10 of them. Local councillors have agreed to the plan and the councilis now inviting voluntary organisations to put themselves forward toprovide "operational management" to a minimum of three centres.

Liz Chekanoff, the early years service manager at Dorset County Council'said: "We feel there are voluntary organisations who have a lot ofexpertise and experience in this area. They have been involved in localSure Start programmes and similar activities and they are slightlyunder-represented in our county."
