The Department for Education and Skills has refused to confirm or deny reports that it is looking into outsourcing support services for children's centres.

Civil servants have expressed concern about what they claim is anunpublished plan to shift work to support the delivery of centres to theNational Remodelling Team, warning that it would "jeopardise" thechildren's centre programme. (Children Now, 22-28 February).

The department told Children Now that it would not comment on leakedstories, fuelling speculation that there is substance to thereports.

"Providing the best possible support to local authorities in takingforward the establishment of children's centres is key to our strategyfor securing the numbers and quality of children's centres," said aspokesman. "We wouldn't do anything to jeopardise that."
