Children's centres: Haringey defends replacement plan

Haringey council has defended its decision to replace a popular service for children and families with 13 children's centres, in the face of strong local opposition.

Calls to allow local authorities more flexibility in the rollout of children's centres have been picked up by campaigners fighting to save the Red Gables Family Centre in Crouch End.

The borough-wide facility is due to close within the next two years and will be replaced by 13 children's centres across the borough.

Campaigners say it should be included in the council's plans as the Department for Education and Skills recommends new services should build on existing provision.

A spokesman for Haringey council said the change would make services more accessible to those most in need and allow the council to tailor support.
