Children's centres: Councils urged to hold open debate

Local authorities are being urged to stage meetings with the local childcare community to talk openly about their plans for children's centres.

The National Day Nurseries Association is encouraging and supportingcouncils to bring together public, private and voluntary providers forfrank debate about the future of children's services.

Events have already been staged in Blackpool, Leicester and Walsall.Patricia Jackson, the association's head of regional development, saidthey had helped kick-start partnership work.

"As well as asking local authorities to organise these events we havesaid we'll come along and give presentations to nurseries on why it isimportant they get involved," added an association spokeswoman.

The spokeswoman said that such consultation events could be morefruitful than traditional and formal written consultation procedures andwere also a way of getting other potential partners on board.
