A report published by Ofsted, based on responses to a consultation on how it should inspect children's centres, highlighted "wider issues about the way in which children's centres are set up and run, including the varying degree of support and involvement in children's centres by local authorities, which responses indicate may be a ‘patchy' picture across the country".
The consultation asked if respondents agreed that local authorities should contribute evidence to the inspection of children's centres. According to the report, 40 per cent strongly agreed, while 42 per cent agreed.
But respondents, including children's centre, school and local authority staff, commented that in some areas councils would not have the knowledge to contribute to the inspection process. Other comments suggested that a requirement to contribute to inspections might encourage a more proactive role in the centres.
