Children in court not represented

Children as young as 12 are appearing in court without legal representation, a survey has found.

The study, conducted by the Ministry of Justice, found that out of asample of more than 1,000 cases involving under-18s, seven per cent ofchildren were not represented.

Penelope Gibbs, a director at the Prison Reform Trust, called for areview of the situation.

"Absolutely no children should be in court without representation," shesaid.

Out of 1,033 young defendants that responded to the survey, 72 wereunrepresented at court including one 12-year-old, a 13-year-old and 1214-year-olds.
