Offences committed by 10- to 17-year-olds fall by 12 per cent

The number of offences committed by 10- to 17-year-olds has fallen by 12 per cent, annual statistics released by the Ministry of Justice have shown.

The Youth Justice Board Annual Workload Statistics for 2008/09 also show there was a slight reduction in the total number of prison sentences for the age group from 6,853 in 2007/08 to 6,720 in 2008/09.

Publication of the figures comes just days after the Ministry of Justice was told it will have to make savings of £325m.

Concerns have been raised that due to recent improvements in youth crime statistics, the sector could be in line for cuts.

Penelope Gibbs, director of the Prison Reform Trust’s campaign to reduce child imprisonment, said the figures show that many of the trends in youth justice are going the right way.
