Youth offending teams failing young people in court, inspection finds

Work by youth offending team (YOT) staff in court is not being done well enough often enough, a damning joint inspection report has found.

Not Making Enough Difference, the findings of HM Inspectorate of Probation, HM Inspectorate of Court Administration, HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate and HM Inspectorate of Constabulary, states that there is "considerable room for improvement" in the work carried out by YOTs in court, and in the quality of the reports they prepare.

The inspection was carried out in six locations in England and Wales to assess how well children and young people under 18 were being managed through the court process by YOTs and other staff – from the point of charge by the police to sentence.

HM chief inspector of probation Andrew Bridges said there were many examples of good practice, but overall there was considerable room for improvement.
