Children Bill: Government to review play in Bill

The Government has agreed to look again at the wording of the Children Bill following lobbying from play professionals.

SkillsActive, the sector skills council for playworkers, is seeking an amendment to replace sections referring to "education and training" with "education, play and recreation".

The move is supported by the Children's Play Council, which argues that play provision is vital for children's wellbeing.

The comments follow the second reading of the Bill in the House of Lords last week, when Lord Pendry called for "restrictive" terminology to be replaced to better reflect outcomes set out in Every Child Matters.

The Government denied it would change specific wording in the Bill, but said it was "looking at it to make sure the Bill is clear and covers play and enjoyment".
