Recreation: Play gets the okay in Bill amendment

The Government has backed down from resisting calls for the Children Bill to give legal recognition to the importance of play.

Minister Baroness Andrews accepted an amendment tabled by Labour's Lord Pendry making recreation a key part of service planning for children.

The minister said the term "recreation" covered play opportunities.

Campaigners such as the Children's Play Council had argued that in omitting reference to recreation, the Bill was out of line with last year's green paper, which listed enjoying and achieving as a key outcome for children.

Director Tim Gill said: "Children and young people consistently tell us how important play and recreation are in their lives, and it is good to see their views have been recognised in this important piece of legislation."
