What help is there for the families of children like Katie Mehigan, who have to fight serious illness? Daniel Martin finds out

Eleven-year-old Katie Mehigan can't remember much about the first few days after doctors discovered she had a brain tumour, when she was only nine. "It was like a nightmare," she recalls.

"I was trying to fight people because nurses kept grabbing hold of me - I didn't know they were trying to help."

The day after her first operation, Katie tried to answer one of her father's questions. When she spoke, she could hear a voice in her head, but no sound came out. Katie was experiencing a reaction to the operation called Posterior Fossa Syndrome, which meant she lost her voice. When she started having chemotherapy a few days later, she couldn't ask any questions.
