Childcare: Workforce strategy - SkillsActive in play inclusionattempt

A last-ditch effort to get playworkers included as a core part of the Children's Workforce Strategy has been launched by play training body SkillsActive.

The Government response to the strategy, unveiled in March 2006, wasaccused of omitting play as a priority area.

Chris Martin, national programme manager at Skills- Active, said, as aresult, the play sector had not been taken seriously in integratedworkforce planning. "The lack of attention paid to playwork has meant ithas not been included in some of the headline pieces of work takingplace," he said.

He said the next phase of the strategy, to be launched in the autumn, provided an opportunity to reverse the situation and timetable concreteactions to support the play workforce.

He urged the play sector to put pressure on the Government through itsconsultation on the new strategy, entitled Refresh, which closes on 30June.
