Childcare work scheme failing early years

Childcare providers taking part in a scheme to get more parents in work are failing to meet demand during the hours when it is needed most, according to official research.

Since April 2007, 20 local authorities have been involved in the scheme to extend free childcare for three- and four-year-olds from 12.5 to 15 hours a week over 38 weeks in a year.

But research released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families last week showed that 44 per cent of providers are not meeting demand for places between 9am and 12noon.
