Crane, who will take up post on 23 May, has more than 20 years' experience working in the voluntary sector.
She established sexual health charity International Family Health and ran it for 14 years. She has recently worked as an international development consultant to non-governmental organisations in Britain and abroad.
Crane said she was looking forward to building on the trust's campaigning record.
"We will continue working to make sure that the promises and pledges made in recent months are delivered," she said.
