Rosemary Murphy called on Gordon Brown to scrap the Nursery Education Grant as part of his 10-year plan for childcare, to be announced in his pre-budget report in the autumn.
The cash should be poured into a new pot that would also subsume cash currently paid out to parents as childcare tax credits, Murphy said. "If they want to join education and care then they can't have separate funding streams," she added.
