Childcare: Funding increase set to disappoint

1 min read
The Government's 10-year plan for childcare is unlikely to feature the dramatic increases in spending experts say are needed to bring about a revolution in childcare, Children Now has learned.

There will be a focus on improving childcare affordability in high cost areas, but campaigners who called for billions in extra funding will be disappointed, sources close to the Government warn.

The strategy will be announced tomorrow (Thursday) alongside the Pre-Budget Report.

Chancellor Gordon Brown is expected to give a commitment to maintain tax credits with an increase in the percentage of the childcare element of working tax credit that can be claimed by Londoners. Treasury insiders say the rise, from 70 to 90 per cent, is an approach that may well be rolled out to disadvantaged areas across the country.

Greater investment in boosting childcare as a profession is planned but the plan will not go down the route of a graduate-led workforce.
