A report by the Institute for Public Policy Research highlights thepotential for co-operatives to deliver a wide range of public services, including childcare.
It argues the co-operative approach can produce better outcomes forchildren by boosting staff retention and ensuring strong communityinvolvement.
And it says the demand-led nature of co-operatives means they can playan important role in childcare for groups that are not well-served atthe moment, including ethnic minority and low-income families, and thoseworking atypical hours or with disabled children.
However, social enterprises often need extra help to develop businesssills, governance arrangements and win public service contracts, thereport adds.
It will be launched next Wednesday, alongside a series of new legalmodels for co-operative childcare developed by Co-operativeChildcare.
