Childcare: Business could do more, says Clarke

Employers could do more to support childcare, education secretary Charles Clarke has claimed.

Clarke told a conference organised by 4Children that the role of employers in meeting the childcare challenge was "underdeveloped".

Referring to a report by the Commons' Public Accounts Committee, which was published last week and highlighted patchy provision of childcare across the country, he said: "We haven't yet achieved a universal, systematic approach that can guarantee every family the support they need in the early years." The Public Accounts Committee called on the Department for Education and Skills to tackle regional gaps in early years provision, saying that the challenge was to make sure the money was spent cost-effectively.
