Childcare: Britain is lagging behind in Europe

Britain is lagging behind other countries in public commitment to childcare, a conference will hear.

Learning from other countries is the theme of tomorrow's Daycare Trust conference, which will feature expert testimony from Finland, Belgium, Sweden and New Zealand.

Daycare Trust director Stephen Burke said many lessons could be learned from abroad about valuing childcare and the childcare workforce.

"We need to look at the priority that is placed on the importance of childcare and early education to create a better society," he said.

Greater investment in training for childcare workers and in the sector as a whole has been shown to pay dividends in many other parts of the world.

"Parents in Britain pay more for childcare than their European neighbours," Burke said.
