Scottish childcare: Qualifications high but pay still behind

New statistics show Scotland's growing childcare workforce is more highly qualified than ever but pay levels are still lagging.

Figures for 2004, published by the Scottish Executive, show the workforce has expanded to 28,150, with 1,400 more people employed in pre-school education and daycare centres than the previous year.

There was also an increase in the proportion of pre-school and childcare staff with qualifications, from 67 per cent in 2003 to 74 per cent in 2004.

However, there are still 4,200 unqualified staff who are not in training. Pay is still a long way below the national average of 11 per hour, with a quarter of private sector workers and seven per cent of local authority staff earning less than 5 an hour.
