Childcare: Bill set to continue through Parliament

The ground-breaking Childcare Bill is likely to resume its progress through Parliament in March after a delay that prompted some concern in the sector. However, no firm date has yet been set.

The Bill, which will place a duty on local authorities to ensure enoughchildcare is available, has already gone through its initial stages inParliament, including being examined in detail by a committee ofMPs.

It was expected to return to the House of Commons in January for the"report stage", a chance for MPs to debate the Bill and table furtheramendments. But it was postponed with no date set for it to move on.

Steve Alexander, chief executive of the Pre-School Learning Alliance,urged the Government not to delay any further and to make the Bill apriority.

"In order to ensure stability, providers and local authorities needclarity on how the new duties will work in practice," he said.
