Childcare bill: Random checks plan for settings

Ofsted may use random sampling to assess childcare providers on a new voluntary register, the watchdog's director of early years Dorian Bradley said last week.

Government is revamping inspection through the Childcare Bill, which ison the verge of becoming law. Under the changes, childcare for childrenaged up to eight will have to be registered and inspected by Ofsted. However, childcare provision for children aged over eight will have theoption of joining a voluntary register.

Bradley said the idea was to create a system where providers were notoverburdened by regulation. "We're working on the assumption that therewill not be universal inspection of these providers," he said.

Complaints would make providers a priority for inspection, he added.
