Childcare: 33m allocated to London scheme

Funding totalling 33m will go into a three-year programme to help disadvantaged families in London access childcare, it was announced last week.

The London Childcare Affordability Programme will target some of the worst-off families in the capital through a range of initiatives, including subsidies to low-cost childcare providers (Children Now, 9-15 March).

Two-thirds of the cash will come from the London Development Agency and the rest from the Government's Sure Start Unit. In the first year 5m will be spent on two pilots. The first will subsidise affordable childcare for low-income families while the second will encourage providers to offer more flexible and part-time care.
