It doesn't take a financial whizz to work out the childcare equation doesn't add up. In fact, an advanced toddler would be able to spot the flaw in the Government's grand vision of high-quality, universal childcare.
On one hand parents can't afford the fees. On the other, settings are struggling to pay staff wages as well as attract workers.
It's not easy explaining to a nursery nurse that they're valued and important when the average pay for an early years worker is about 6,000 per year.
Childcare providers appear united in their need for supply-side funding to plug the affordability gap and help boost sustainability. Nowhere is the situation more critical than in London, where childcare costs outstrip most of the country and child poverty is high.
