What’s it all about? The government is looking to overhaul child maintenance to encourage separated couples to set up private arrangements and introduce a fee-based support service for those that cannot reach such an agreement.
The way maintenance is calculated will also change with a greater focus on tax data. The government hopes the proposals being put out to consultation will create "a simpler, more efficient and transparent service".
The consultation is being handled by the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission.
What are the main points? Calculations being proposed will take into account other children supported by the non-resident parent. This is likely to lead to reduced payments for the non-resident parent.
The amount of maintenance will still be based on income but will be gathered straight from HM Revenue and Customs data rather than relying on information from the non-resident parent. The aim is to reduce delays and improve the accuracy of information.
