
In a damning report, the work and pensions select committee has branded government plans to charge parents to use the government’s collection service as "excessive and complex".
It said charges should only be applied to a parent who has been unwilling to arrange payment without using the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission, which replaced the Child Support Agency in 2008.
Committee chair Anne Begg said: "The proposed charges are excessive, complex and fall too heavily on parents with care of children. Where a parent with care has taken all reasonable steps to reach a voluntary agreement, the proposed charges should be paid by the non-resident parent."
