Children Now spoke to a number of directors as the row about sexoffenders in schools refused to go away.
Andrew Webb, children's services director at Stockport Council andco-chair of the Association of Directors of Social Services' childrenand families committee, said it would be wrong if the Government imposeda blanket ban preventing everyone on the register from ever working in aschool. He said: "There needs to be some discretion to take into accountthe nature of offences and rehabilitation."
But others disagreed and called on the Government to change the currentsystem. David Hawker, director of children's services at Brighton & HoveCouncil, said: "It's better to be safe than sorry. You can get put onthe list for a caution but you've got to draw the line somewhere and thesimplest place to draw it is whether you're on the register or not."
