Child Protection: Cafcass to toughen up its procedures

Cafcass is to toughen up its child protection procedures in the wake of guidance published last week.

The Safeguarding Policy Framework updates the organisation's existingchild protection guidance and sets out deadlines for the implementationof improvements to how Cafcass safeguards children.

The guidance sets out a more consistent process for identifying whetherchildren are at risk when they first come into contact with Cafcass. Italso states that by 1 April 2007, local offices should ask the policefor information about the families they come into contact with as amatter of course.

Anthony Douglas, chief executive of Cafcass, said: "This frameworkrenews our commitment to put children's safety at the centre of all ourwork. Our previous arrangements were fairly minimal and this frameworkclarifies our role. It's about raising child protection standards."
