Child poverty: Treasury backing for Cornwall's plan

A 1.1m plan to combat child poverty in Cornwall won Treasury backing last week.

The multi-agency plan aims to change the focus of child poverty work inthe county by moving away from addressing existing poverty to preventingit.

Richard Williams, head of family services at Cornwall County Council'said: "The whole thinking behind our approach is that prevention isbetter than cure."

The project will divide Cornwall into a collection of "virtual wards"based on the needs of families rather than geographical location.Efforts to improve support for children will be co-ordinated aroundthese wards.

Half of the funding for the project, which ends in 2010, comes from theTreasury's Invest to Save scheme. The rest is from the county council,Jobcentre Plus, North Cornwall District Council and Caradon DistrictCouncil.
