To the passing visitor, Callington is like any other affluent area. Its main shopping area is busy, with not an empty unit in sight, and the town, with a population of 4,500, is home to one of Cornwall's most famous companies, the pasty maker Ginsters.
The latest economic figures for the Caradon District Council area, which includes Callington, also show an area that is doing well. The 2004 index of multiple deprivation map ranks just one of its areas as among England's most deprived. But according to Maureen Hunt, Cornwall County Council's family services area manager for Caradon: "Scratch beneath the surface and you will see that places such as Callington have pockets of the worst deprivation you'll see anywhere in the country."
