Child poverty: Tory government would ditch targets

1 min read
The Conservatives will abandon the Government's commitment to eradicate child poverty by 2020 if they win the next election, Children Now has learned.

Campaigners have expressed concern over the announcement, saying it proves the party has lurched to the right.

Shadow children's minister Tim Loughton said: "We are very sceptical about government claims on child poverty because it is a constantly shifting definition.

"We want to do as much as possible on child poverty and we recognise that the price of housing is a major factor. But we are not going to tick boxes against some constantly changing measure.

"We do care about child poverty but we are not going to be constrained by raw child poverty figures. I don't think people really believe that a million people have been brought out of child poverty by this Government."
