Child poverty: Government sticks to 2010 targets

The Government has insisted that it still aims to halve child poverty by 2010, despite failing to meet its first target of cutting it by a quarter.

Figures released last week show that the initial target was narrowlymissed with a reduction of 23 per cent before housing costs werededucted.

But ministers highlighted their success in lifting 800,000 children outof poverty since 1997.

Work and pensions secretary John Hutton said: "We have not quite reachedour first target on child poverty, but we remain committed to the goalof eradicating poverty within a generation. Now we must redouble ourefforts to achieve our goal."

Save the Children called the Government's failure to hit the target"devastating for the future of the poorest children".
