Chess used in bid to boost exam results

Education
An alternative education scheme at a pupil referral unit (PRU) in Bradford is using chess to increase pupil confidence and improve exam results.

Teachers and specialist chess coaches claim the game has helped pupils at Park Primary PRU develop social skills and prepare for exams. The unit organised tournaments in a bid to prepare pupils for the pressure of SATs.

While only half the pupils completed their SATs in 2007, all but one pupil finished their paper in the recent exams. Pupils also competed in a tournament against two mainstream schools last week and won best individual pupil and best overall school.

PRU chess coach Charles Wood said: "Chess has massive benefits in terms of the Every Child Matters outcomes - it's a no-brainer. It's also something everyone can take part in."
