Behind the Inspection Rating: PRU brings excitement to learning

“A good PRU is an empty PRU,” says Wendy Casson, head teacher at Blackpool pupil referral unit Educational Diversity. For the past few years it is a goal her service has successfully been putting into practice.

Educational Diversity landed a good rating in its latest Ofsted report. One of the successes picked up on by the inspector was a significant drop in referrals in the last year, thanks, in large part, to the service’s outreach team. “One of the key developments of the past two years was the introduction of an outreach service,” says Casson. “They deliver bespoke packages in schools to support them on whole-school issues or advise on how they could manage behaviour differently, but they also work with individual staff and students.”
