Chapter One Childcare, Perthshire

1 min read Early Years
What is it? Since the beginning of January, Chapter One Childcare has pledged its commitment to becoming a fully fledged eco-friendly nursery. This means changing its ways to ensure that nothing is wasted or used unnecessarily and that children and parents are included in the process.

How? Last week the nursery organised a local litter-picking event, which is now going to be a monthly fixture. It has also introduced a recycling policy and children bring in bottles, glass and tins from home. They make daily visits to the recycling depot at the local supermarket. The nursery plans to hold a fashion show this month too, featuring clothes made from eco-friendly and recycled goods. Children have been making their own eco-friendly glue and eating off homemade recyclable paper plates.

Why are you doing it? Chapter One Childcare is hoping to achieve green flag status, which is awarded to eco-friendly centres, schools and organisations. This is part of the government's efforts to encourage all education providers to become eco-friendly by 2020.

How's it going? The children are embracing the project and are really enthusiastic about recycling everything they can - so much so that parents have been met with stern disdain if their green standards aren't met at home.
