What is it all about? To ensure children receive high-quality education, schools need to provide support and professional development to teachers. Performance management is the process for reviewing and providing feedback on teacher and head teacher performance. It is used to identify strengths and weaknesses, and offers action to address them. However, the government believes the existing regulations are too complex and prescriptive so it has announced proposals to cut bureaucracy from performance management in England.
What are the main points? The government is now consulting on changes that will make it easier for schools to manage teachers and deal with any poorly performing teachers. These include simpler regulations that set fewer basic requirements, remove restrictions and leave other decisions to schools. Schools will be able to remove poorly performing teachers in about a term, a process that currently takes a year or more. The proposals will also scrap about 60 pages of guidance from the regulations.
