Poor teachers could be sacked more quickly

2 mins read Careers Education
The Department for Education (DfE) is considering plans that would allow schools to sack underperforming teachers in the space of one school term.

The consultation on proposed changes to performance management and capability arrangements suggests that heads should be able to remove "poorly performing" teachers more quickly because the process can currently take a year or more.

According to government, the existing system for teachers’ performance management "fails to respect the professionalism of head teachers and teachers and makes it harder for schools to manage vital processes, such as how staff are trained and rewarded".

The consultation advocates simplifying performance management regulations and removing restrictions such as the "three-hour observation rule", which serves to limit the length of time teachers can be observed in class.
